High school football season is upon us as Massachusetts public begins the 2010 season tonight with a full slate of games.

The usual suspects sit atop the pre season favorites as Brockton, Xaverian, Everett, BC High, and Billerica return key cogs in their quest for Super Bowl glory this season.

Massachusetts also boasts some formidable individual talent led by returning 2009 Gatorade Player of The Year and New England prep stars Player of the Year, Billerica Junior QB Nick LaSpada.  LaSpada, who is coming off of a playoff ACL tear, has looked sharp in pre-season play and looks to lead Billerica back to Super Bowl glory.

The top player in the senior class is Brockton’s Albert Louis-Jean.  The Brockton standout is headed to “The U” next fall to suit up for Randy Shannon’s Hurricanes.  Everett also boasts talented running back/defensive back Manny Asprilla who recently accepted a scholarship to Boston College.  BC High’s star lineman Obum Obukwelu is the latest Mass star to sign with a D1 team as he will take his emerging talents to UConn next year.  The Catholic Conference always produces talented college bound players and this year is no different as Xaverian and Catholic Memorial also have D1 prospects in Xaverian senior RB Joe Colton and CM junior stars to only name a few.

A couple of teams to keep an eye on in Massachusetts this year are Chelmsford and Lynn English.  While it would not be a major surprise if either team went deep in the post season they will have to battle some tough league opponents to make it far.  Chelmsford junior MLB Tim Joy is a budding star and RB Joe Gennaro is a returning ball carrier on a mission.  Much will depend on how senior QB A.J. Rotella can man the offense for the Lions.  Lynn English has star WR Travonne Berry-Rogers who is a play maker and also accomplished basketball player for the Bulldogs.

New Hampshire got underway last weekend and Bishop Guertin looked like last year’s undefeated season was no fluke as they beat up Salem and star RB Max Jacques 48-21.  BG was led by all purpose senior RB Mike Kelly who had a banner day with 5 TD’s, 187 yards rushing and 125 yards through the air.  BG senior QB Steve Cuipa also looked sharp in the win.

New Hampshire’s other talented stars include Salem’s senior QB Matt Cannone and junior RB Jackson Federick.  Along with Jacques, Salem should have another strong season in 2010.  Nashua North has star RB Andre Williams back as does Londonderry with their star junior RB Sean O’Gorman.  Pinkerton Academy will hand the QB duties off to sophomore Chris St. Onge who will look to lead them back to another post season victory.
