Hoops Notes:

  • There is a big shakeup in store for both the New England top 15 and the Massachusetts top 15. Charlestown's handling of St. John's Prep knocks them from number one and Lynn English and Brockton have also moved up with their play of late.
  • Charlestown point guard Rony Fernandes had a breakout game as the junior scored 23 points to lead the Townies to the win.
  • Congratulations to Pat Connaughton (broke all-time scoring mark at St. John's Prep (MA), Kris Dunn of New London (CT) (1000 points) and Sean McClung of Bishop Guertin (NH) (1000 points) for achieving individual milestones last week.
  • Stat line of the month of January: Joe Mussachia of Manchester Essex. While also hitting the 1000 point mark last week Mussachia turned in one of the performances of the year on January 14, 2011 scoring 26 points, grabbing 34 rebounds, and dishing out 7 assists to lead Manchester Essex over North Andover in an upset in Eastern Mass hoops.  The Amherst bound senior has Manchester-Essex in the hunt to break into the top 25 teams in Massachusetts.
  • McDonald's All American Nominees came out last week and Michael Carter-Williams of St. Andrews (RI) looks to have the strongest chance of any New England seniors to play in the game. See the nominees here.
  • Wayne Seldon (pictured) of the Tilton School is really starting to break out as the number one option scoring the ball for the Tilton School. The 6'4 wing goes to the basket like a bull and has developed his strength and confidence to take on the older prep school talent . The one-on-one match up with Carter-Willimas in the BABC Prep Classic a couple weekends ago was a great show of talent and fire.
  • A couple of seniors who are flying under the radar but are having great seasons are Mark Cornelius of Westford Academy and Michael Lofton of Mansfield. Both seniors have their respective teams in the top 10 in Massachusetts and both continue to impress with their overall inside and outside games. Cornelius is currently second in the Dual County League in scoring and first in rebounding. Lofton is coming off onwe of his best opverall games leading masfield over Franklin. The senior had a tripple double scoring 17 points, 12rebounds and 10 assists.
