Billerica remains undefeated

Billerica vs. Chelmsford is one of the best rivalries in the state of Massachusetts. Both teams are always extremely tough and play every possesion 100%. Effort is never at a premium when you watch these two Merrimack Valley Conference squads go to war. Billerica has a more storied lacrosse history but Chelmsford is starting to develop top tier talent and competing with the big boys of Massachusetts high school lacrosse.
On this soggy Wednesday afternoon in Chelmsford the Minutemen of Billerica came out on top 12-5 to remain undefeated at (10-0) on the season. Chelmsford (7-4) gave Billerica everything they could handle in the first half with the score only 6-4 Billerica at the mid way point.
Billerica Senior Middie Dylan Fernandes provided the offensive spark with two beautiful goals. The defense was led by Senior Jimmy Holland who led the staunch group of long poles in shutting down Chelmsford’s explosive attack all day.
Chelmsford kept it close with the fine offensive play of UMass bound Senior Attack Matt Whippen (1G, 1A). The lefty unloaded for his loan goal on a beautiful rush midway through the opening period and assisted on another.
The second half began with Billerica running off 4 quick goals and dominating the possessions. Junior All American Attack candidate Grant Whiteway (2G, 1A) led Billerica’s offense along with sophomore attack Cam Slatton (2G, 1A). Whiteway showed off his smooth game and big shot and the Billerica Midfield and Attack used their speed and stick skills to control the majority of the second half en route to the victory.
For Chelmsford we were very impressed with the play of Junior Defenseman Andy Basler who scored Chelmsford’s lone second half goal with a 15 yard rip from the top of the box. Bassler also did a great job on Whiteway throughout the contest containing the Billerica star as much as one possibly can. Whiteway and Bassler, both juniors, should give us many more quality matchups over the next year plus.
Chelmsford and Billerica will play again at Billerica May 13th at 7pm under the lights.
