LYNN, Mass. ---Chris Keaton scored 19 points to help the Beverly Panthers win a back and forth game against the powerful Lynn English Bulldogs, 51-49 at Lynn English High School.

Lynn English started the scoring when star center Keandre Stanton scored two of his game high 22 points. Beverly would take a 13-10 into the second quarter.

In the second quarter, Beverly’s Zach Zigelbaum, who scored 16 points, helped the visiting Panthers extend its lead against the Bulldogs. The Panthers scored the last eight points of the first half and six of those points were scored by Zigelbaum. Beverly took a 30-19 lead into the halftime break.

The Panthers picked up where they left off after halftime when Zigelbaum scored the first four points of the third quarter. At that point, Beverly had its largest lead of the game at 30-19.

After the Panthers scored 12 straight points at the end of the second quarter and the beginning of the third quarter, the Bulldogs showed why they are one of the best teams in Massachusetts. Stanton scored seven points, Fred Hogan scored five points and Tizauni Boyles scored three points in the third quarter to help the Bulldogs keep up with the Panthers. At the end of the third quarter, Beverly was ahead, 40-36.

In the fourth quarter both teams continued to go back and forth. Whenever the Panthers scored the Bulldogs had an answer. Early in the fourth quarter, Hogan hit a free throw to tie the game 41-41. After he missed his second free throw attempt, which would have put Lynn English ahead, Beverly scored four straight points to put them ahead, 45-41. Lynn English had another answer when Hogan scored two more points and Stanton scored six points, including two from the free throw line, to put the Bulldogs ahead for the first time since the opening minute of the game. In the last minute of the game, Beverly scored four straight points. Their final two points came with 20.2 seconds remaining in the game.

“It feels good to beat Lynn English tonight, especially since we lost a tough game to Peabody last Friday,” said Keaton. “We are looking to compete for the Northeast Conference title this season (Lynn English has won the title for five straight seasons) and we are working hard towards achieving that.”

With the win, Beverly improves to 2-1 while Lynn English drops to 2-1.
